A Compendium of Spells, Charms and Devices of the Spirit World is a book in Sleepy Hollow. It was given to Ichabod Crane by Katrina Van Tassel.
Role in the film[]
The book originally belonged to Katrina's mother Elizabeth, who later gave it to her daughter, an aspiring white witch. Later, in adulthood Katrina gave the book to Ichabod when he came to solve a series of murders committed by the Headless Horseman.
After the attack on the church, Katrina returned home, now an orphan. When he's leaving Sleepy Hollow after believing Katrina is the cause of all the chaos, he looks at them, recalls the scar on Lady Van Tassel's hand, and is able to put two and two together; the cut on the body believed to be Lady Van Tassel was made postmortem, and she faked her death. It is reading in this book (it's Katrina's book of spells) that makes Ichabod realize that Katrina is not an evil witch, as he then thought, but a good one; and that she loves him, because he reads that her spell was "to protect a loved one".
Later, when Ichabod gets shot, the Spellbook protects him from the bullet.
